The Nigerian National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme has come a long way since its inception in the 70s. But due to some of some problems that we are are witnessin more and more people even in government are calling for the scrappin of the programme.
Prominent among some of the recent problems is the brutal killing of some of the corp members serving in the northern part of the country during the elections. One noticeable in-justice done by NYSC itself was the organisation not honouring the corp members by simply putting their faces on their website for remebrance purposes even if it is for some time, but none was done. The website of the NYSC does not even see to function properly even when you try to access it, for example when you try to download the NYSC DECREE which is a downloadable document all you will get is a message saying sorry file corupted and cannot be repaired! Is NYSC serious? Only in Nigeria that a programme focused on the youth can be operated on an analogue programme, imagine in this day and age of facebook and twitter!
There is also the problem of honesty on the part of NYSC, since the creation of of the NYSC, the rich Nigerians have always found a way to manipulate the posting of their children to lucrative states and jobs. These days, their children do not even smell those dishelvelled campuses where the children of the poor play at being "undergraduates". They are all abroad studying in real universities!
It is clear that the NYSC is grappling with alot of problems it cannot solve, therefore in light of all these problems, should the Nysc be scrapped?
